Thoughts About What I Like
I know that people look at me funny when I talk about how there’s at least one drum corps show a year that’s “Better Than Sex”. I usually follow it up with a, “Yes, I know how that sounds.” But it’s true.
One of the points of sex is the pleasure of the release. All of the tension that you’ve been feeling? It should all go away for a short period of time if you’re doing things right. (Okay, not necessarily but go with me here for the analogy.) It’s build up, build up, build up, and then BOOM!
The last couple of weeks of DCI are the end of a year-long period of anticipation. Phantom announces that they’re doing Faust, we all get excited, the show comes out, we’re waiting for everything to get put into the show, they finally deliver the last week, and I’m screaming my fool head off in satisfaction. The whole year’s cycle was validated in those last 45 seconds of the show when I got to experience what I called “Orgasm via Chord Progression”.
Snakes on a Plane was the same kind of experience. I found out it was a real movie in March, and I was ready for that film. Tonight I saw it, and it totally delivered. That was two magnificent hours, and I was glowing as I left the theater.
Both of those moments happened within a week of each other, and I expect that both of them will help me cope with the long road I have ahead. With my mood fluctuating all over the place while I try to get a handle on things, it’s good to experience moments of pure emotional pleasure. If I have to maintain myself during the down-swings, I should at least have as much joy as possible when I’m up.
I’m not sure what the next thing is going to be on my list, but SoaP will definitely help me get through this weekend and into my first week of reduced schedule at the bar. I’ve got to find the joy in life, or at least what brings me joy, because I’ve been too focused on work and work and work and… and the TiVo can only do so much.
This might actually be a good thing.
