So close… so happy.

So… yeah.

I had the ever vaunted Romeo and Juliet audition on Saturday.  It involved talking with the director, doing some stage combat, and was easily the longest audition I’ve ever had at the Lyric.  Two things happened:

1. I learned that in my current medical state, I don’t think that I would have been able to complete the rehearsal process.  Did you ever see that clip from the “How Bugs Bunny became famous” classic cartoon where he did the Irish Jig and had to pause in the middle to breathe heavily?  That was me.

2. Out of 50+ people auditioning for the role, I made the cut down to 11.  They needed 9 people.  I was actor #10.

In other words, God/the universe was giving me a sign: You’re damn good, now focus on getting healthy.

I really can’t complain.  I would have pushed myself to the breaking point with my health, and that’s not good.  Of course, the first thing I did the day after the audition was go out drinking.  (No lectures please, that was my first alcohol in a month.  My body can take it at that rate.)

This week, I get to enjoy what I know will likely be my last week at the Lyric for the season… and enjoy it I will.  The gay subtext Oreste/Pylade duet in Act III will make me cry both nights, I know it.  Take the beauty when it’s there, find other beauty to fill the gap, and remeber that there’s nothing weak in admitting your weaknesses.

And hopefully by March, I’ll be back to normal.  I can’t wait!
